Literature Text

i can feel the sound of space,
blowing holes in my horizon. i can see - the
thin air breaking
around my earlobes and scratching the drums of my ear.

i would like to fly
to walk on the surface of a star, but i am
motivationally mute
and i would like to walk on the surface of a wave
[sweet incomprehension on the face of my mother]
but to walk on water, jesus said you must have faith

and i am no peter.

i let the holy bread melt
on my tongue, so soft and sweet - as right is wrong;
as though i could absorb the belief
as though i could steal the faith.

the future stutters in my open palms, skipping
over the sibilance of tomorrow.
i can taste the rush of fear to my fingertips and
i can feel you
blossoming in the face of my disbelief.

i think i would like to write my name on the wall.

stammering over the long 'a'
and the short 'e'
and the double-you that i see reflected in my minds
eye.

i would like to belong, i think
is all i have to believe in nowadays, to simply
be

myself.

oh, honey
it's not so hard.
